Dr. Tonia Thompson, Superintendent

Dr. Tonia Thompson Dr. Tonia Thompson brings over 30 years of experience with the Binghamton City School District as she takes on the role of superintendent. Thompson most recently served as the assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction, and accountability, where she was responsible for overseeing all curriculum development, assessments and oversaw the development and administration of competitive and non-competitive grant funds.
She chaired the district-wide Professional Development Committee, Curriculum Council, District Data Team, District Policy Committee, and Co-chairs the District Annual Professional Performance Review and Instructional Technology Committee. She led all activities related to accountability as related to student performance.
Thompson graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in biology with a minor in chemistry and concentration in human services, followed by a Master of Arts in Teaching Science from Binghamton University. She began her career in education in 1987 as a high school science teacher, later moving to West Middle School to teach physical science. An opportunity to bring her knowledge of science teaching to the elementary level occurred when she took a position as a challenge teacher and teacher resource for elementary science for seven years.
During her tenure she was recognized as New York State Teacher of the Year by the Association for Gifted and Talented, National Presidential Award Winner in Elementary Science, Math, and Science and Technology Teacher of the Year – Roberson Museum. After receiving the national Albert Einstein Distinguished Teaching Fellowship award, she served as a fellow at the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Virginia. Interested in continuing her education, she returned to New York State as a graduate student at Syracuse University in pursuit of a Certificate in Educational Leadership. As an Administrative Intern with Skaneateles School District, she was recognized for her work by receiving the Lansing G. Baker Award for Outstanding Educational Leadership Intern. She additionally earned a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Syracuse University, where she studied the impact of parent education on families and children. Thompson is appreciative of the opportunity to lead the school district forward in hopes of educating, empowering and challenging all students. 

Christine Choi, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Budget

Christine ChoiChristine Choi started her career over 20 years ago as a Business Education teacher and Work-Based Learning Coordinator in Wisconsin. In 2003, she relocated to the Binghamton area and was a Business Education teacher for Union-Endicott Central School District for nine years. She then joined Broome-Tioga BOCES/South Central Regional Information Center as the Race to the Top Data Services Coordinator in 2013. While at BT BOCES, Choi also served as the Data Services Manager and, most recently, the Assistant Director for Technology, Leadership and Innovation. Choi holds a B.S.Ed. in Business and Vocational Education from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, an M.S.Ed. in Special Education from the State University of New York-Binghamton and a Certificate of Advanced Studies-Educational Leadership from the State University of New York-Binghamton.

As the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Budget, Choi develops and administers the district-wide budget and long-range financial planning, provides leadership and coordination for curriculum and instruction initiatives and programs, helps to ensure accurate and timely submission of state reporting data, negotiates and coordinates the development and implementation of the Annual Professional Performance Review process, collaborates in the evaluation of administrators and assists the Superintendent as needed.
